A MOTION was raised at this month’s municipal meeting in Newcastle West regarding safety issues in a Limerick village.
The motion was raised for a pedestrian crossing to be put in place at Glin National School.
According to the Fine Gael councillor, children have no place to cross the road on their way to school, with walking becoming a more popular way for children in the area to commute to school. This poses a health and safety risk for children who are trying to cross the busy regional road.
“The infrastructure is needed, Glin National School is going very successfully at the minute,” Cllr Sheahan said of the school compared to over a decade ago.
He called for the implementation of the pedestrian crossing as soon as possible, councillors at the meeting also mentioned the possibility of putting in place a raised pedestrian crossing as it also encourages cars to slow down when reaching the crossing.
According to Mr Sheehan of transportation and mobility for the Newcastle West district, a pedestrian crossing will be incorporated between Marian Place which is a few meters north of the school and Glin National School within the schedule of municipal district works in 2024.
