Ger Curtin of Old Cork Road, Limerick who was named as the victim of the fatal assault in Garryowen

THE VICTIM of a fatal assault in Garryowen has been named locally as Ger Curtin (42), from Old Cork Road, Limerick. 

Mr Curtin’s body was found by gardaí in the front driveway of a property at Sarsfield Avenue, Garryowen at around 4.45am this Saturday, November 4. 

According to sources he was allegedly struck with a shovel. It is understood that he did not live at the property where his body was discovered and gardaí are trying to piece together his final movements from Friday night into early Saturday morning.

A male (aged in his 40s) was arrested at the scene of the incident. He is currently detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984, at a garda station in Limerick.

Tributes have been paid to Mr Curtin since early morning on social media by his family and friends.

One of Mr Curtin’s nephews wrote: “Rest in peace my uncle Ger, I will love you forever, till we meet again my uncle.”

Another man posted: “Thinking of the Curtin family at this sad time. RIP GER, one cruel world we live in.”

Mr Curtin’s body remained at the scene on Saturday morning. The scene was preserved for a technical examination by members of the Garda Technical Bureau.

According to gardai, a post mortem will be carried out in due course.

Gardaí are continuing to appeal for anyone with information in relation to the incident to come forward.

Those with camera footage, including CCTV and dash-cam recordings, from the Sarsfield Avenue area between 4am and 5.15am on Saturday morning are asked to make it available to gardaí.
