A cruise ship in the Shannon Estuary in 2019
FORMER European Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley said 750,000 people applied for 250,000 tickets at this year’s Ryder Cup in Rome so Limerick can expect a huge influx of fans in 2027 but where will they all stay?
As well as traditional accommodation like hotels and B&Bs many homeowners are more than happy to ‘fore-go’ their home for a week or 10 days. Dozens of homes in Limerick and surrounding counties have been advertised for rent for tens of thousands of euros.
Another option that Limerick Live understands is being looked at is huge cruise ships docking in Foynes. Five cruise ships can be accommodated at anchorage which is located 1 nautical mile from Foynes Port tender quay.
Passengers are tendered ashore to Foynes Yacht Club Pontoon and from there commute the 16 miles onto Adare Manor or fly by helicopter. If the new road is completed it would be an ideal way of transporting thousands of fans to the Ryder Cup before returning to their cabin at night to reflect on the day’s play.
With depths in some parts of the estuary up to 32m, the estuary is considered one of the deepest, most sheltered ports in the world.
Cruise ships could be the perfect solution for large American companies or corporations wishing to bring groups of clients to the Ryder Cup as a thank you for their business and further cement relationships.
Limerick Live contacted a number of companies including Cruise Lowdown, Royal Caribbean Cruises, Disney Cruise Line and Norwegian Cruise Line asking if they are considering availing of the deep water port in Foynes for Ryder Cup 2027 but there have been no responses at this time.
