New cemetery with over 3,000 plots planned for Limerick

A NEW private cemetery to include over 3,000 plots is planned for one of the fastest growing areas of Limerick.

Developers have signalled their intention to build a memorial park at a three-acre site in Monaleen, which is currently home to a pitch and putt course.

According to a planning notice published in last weekend's Limerick Leader newspaper, the development - if granted - will bring a total of 3,335 plots to the site, and will likely be built over three phases.

The first phase will see the building of a traditional burial garden of around half a hectare, comprising of 1,048 burial plots.

There will be a burial area for ashes on a 0.07 hectare patch of land. Columbarium walls - used for the interment of ashes - will be integrated into the traditional burial gardens, measuring around 2.3 metres high over land space of 35 square metres.

Vehicle and pedestrian access will be provided from Monaleen Road, while 62 car parking spaces will be provided across two sites, according to the proposals.

In the centre of the development, there will be a reception plaza which will contain a single-storey building to include a staff welfare room and toilets. A maintenance compound will be located adjacent.

The site will be extensively landscaped to include low earth pathways, and there will be extensive landscaping to the existing site.

A second phase of development will see three further traditional burial gardens which will contain 850 plots.

Columbarium walls will again be included, as will pedestrian pathways. As part of the second stage, a meditation garden is planned, as well as a reflection pool.

The third and final stage will see around 0.78 hectares of land converted into space for another 1,437 burial plots.

The developer now has a fortnight to submit papers to Limerick City and County Council.

Limerick Live has sought comment from the company delivering the scheme - a response is awaited.
