Four men charged following violent incident at Limerick filling station

FOUR men have appeared in court after they were charged in relation to a violent disorder incident at a service station on the outskirts of Limerick city.

The incident, which took place at approximately 3.30pm on the Ballysimon Road on Bank Holiday Monday, saw a dark-coloured car being driven at high speed around the forecourt of a filling station

CCTV footage of the incident, which has been widely circulated on social media, shows a man dressed in black and yielding an implement coming within inches of the car as it speeds past the pumps before it ploughs into a fire extinguisher and continues on at speed.

The man can be seen limping away from the petrol pumps. He is one of three men seen on the footage yielding implements as they chase the car and then attempt to evade danger as it veers towards them. The man is then seen limping away from the petrol pumps.

Earlier this week, gardai investigating the matter conducted a search operation at a number of residences on Childers Road in the city.

"The operation was carried out by gardaí from Henry Street Crime Unit, supported by the Regional Armed Support Unit and the Divisional Search Team.

"Four males (aged in their 40s, 30s, 20s, late teens) were arrested and detained at garda stations in Limerick under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.

"A number of items were also seized, which are subject to further investigation," said the garda spokesperson.

Gardai have now confirmed the four males were have since been charged in relation to the incident.

They appeared before a special sitting of Limerick District Court on Tuesday.

"As this matter is now before the courts, An Garda Síochána will not be commenting further at this time," said a garda spokesperson.
