A GATHERING to remember Sinéad O’Connor will take place this weekend in Limerick city.
‘Remembering Sinéad O’Connor’ will take place this Sunday at 1pm at Arthur’s Quay Park.
Organised by fourth-year journalism student at UL and staff writer for HotPress, Molly Cantwell, the gathering aims to bring fans together to pay tribute to the late singer-songwriter and activist.
After gatherings took place across the country in memory Sinéad, Molly wanted to organise something in Limerick to pay her respect to the artist she grew up listening to.
“My introduction to music was Sinéad O’Connor. I grew up in a trad kind of household, my grandparents would have like trad circles and O’Connor would be my choice of song when I sat in the middle of the circle. That’s the first kind of stuff that I remember singing,” Molly says.
And every time she visited her Spanish granddad, Molly would dance around the living room to Sinéad’s songs with him. “It’s a big family memory and introduction to music for me,” she notes.
Speaking of the late artist, she says: “I was born after like SNL, so I saw her more when I was growing up as this musical icon. Her writing, her voice, everything was amazing to me. But obviously, since growing up and seeing the things that she stood for, that means so much to me. I didn’t hear her enough when she was here, and I was so shocked and upset by her death that I just feel like Limerick needs to do something. We’ve lost Dolores O'Riordan, one of the big music legends here as well, so I feel like we’re the place that needs to celebrate her the most as well.”
