Councillors approve sale of Limerick home for just under €200

THE VILLAGE of Adare in Limerick is considered one of the most expensive places in Ireland to buy a home.

However, councillors, at the bi-monthly meeting of the council, approved a sale of a property in the village for just under €200.

Subject to the legal process, the property, at Desmond Drive, will now be transferred from council ownership to a private party for the sum of €195.42.

In an explanatory note to members of the Adare-Rathkeale district earlier this year, staff housing officer Kathy O'Grady explained: “The following property was purchased under a Tenant Purchase Scheme. The legal personal representative of the estate is now acquiring the freehold interest.”

The council had previously acquired the land from another private party.

As of this Tuesday, there were only six properties for sale in the village of Adare, according to the website daft.ie.

The cheapest asking price was a three-bedroom home for €350,000.

The two most expensive properties in Adare would set you back at least €950,000 each.

These are detached homes in secluded locations.

Councillors in Adare have long complained that young people brought up in Adare simply cannot get on the housing ladder in their own parish.

They argue this has been exacerbated by the ban on once-off houses.
