Match made in heaven: Limerick newlyweds kick start honeymoon by cheering on Munster champions

IT’S A MATCH made in heaven for a newlywed couple who planned their wedding weekend to include cheering on the Limerick hurlers in their historic five-in-a-row Munster final win.

Marie and Andrew O’Shea, both living in Grange said their vows in the quaint local parish church on Friday morning with an “absolutely unbelievable” reception in the Radisson Blu Hotel on the Ennis Road before kitting themselves out in Limerick colours to cheer on the hurlers in the Munster final on Sunday.

Marie says celebrating in the TUS Gaelic Grounds amongst 43,000 hurling fans was incredible although she forgot to pack suncream before the big game.

“The fact that they won was an even better wedding present. We were melted out of it, I’d say I’ve third-degree burns on my face from it,” she laughed.

“The excitement was unreal at the match. We couldn’t even talk at the end of it. I just looked at Andrew and went ‘are you okay?’ No, we could barely breathe, the excitement was just brilliant.”

The newlyweds certainly got a headstart on the tan as they’re setting sail on a Mediterranean cruise as part of their honeymoon.

Marie and Andrew are flying into Rome and spending two nights in the Italian capital before boarding the ship.

“To be fair the Munster final was nearly planned around the honeymoon rather than the other way around!” Marie said.

“I even bought my husband a wedding present, he does clay pigeon shooting and it was a night away. I was googling to see when the All-Ireland final was on to make sure we weren’t away that weekend!”

There’s no need for Marie and Andrew to panic, however, as the couple will be home in plenty of time for Limerick’s All-Ireland semi-final match-up as the couple “wouldn’t miss it for the world”.

The TUS Gaelic Grounds was electric with energy following Limerick's win over Clare at the weekend, becoming only the second county in Munster to win five-in-a-row Munster Championship titles. Cork won five-in-a-row titles on three occasions, most recently from 1982 to 1986.

Limerick advance to the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship Semi-Final where they will be playing the quarter-final winners on Saturday, July 8.
