Popular Limerick retailer to close up shop after over half a century

Billy Higgins Clothing located on Sarsfield Street will be ceasing operations

IT WILL soon be the end of an era for a high fashion clothing business which has been styling those near and far for over half a century in the heart of Limerick city.

Billy Higgins who runs the eponymous business on Sarsfield Street in the city will be retiring sometime in the near future, meaning the doors to his long-established store will be closing for the final time.

It is not known when exactly Mr Higgins plans to close the business, but he believes that this Christmas will mark the store's last festive season in operation.

Billy Higgins Clothing has been styling the population in high fashion for decades and, according to Mr Higgins, it is approaching the time when he must close the doors as he has been working in the store for 50 years.

“There’s no other reason to the retirement only that I am 65 years of age,” Mr Higgins said.

“I’m at this 50 years and I just need a bit of time to spend with my kids and enjoy whatever life I have left.”

Even though Mr Higgins will be ceasing operations he continues to be “out the door” with business from clients.

“We’re so busy with weddings and suits and our regular customers. We’re established 67 years but I am just burnt out from it at this stage,” Mr Higgins explained.

Billy Higgins Clothing is located at 8 Sarsfield Street and is currently listed for sale on Daft.ie. It is a four-storey over basement level building which has been one of the pride and joys of Mr Higgins’ time while running the business.

The date in which Mr Higgins will be retiring will depend on when a sale agreement is reached for the property which is listed for €700,000.

“It’s all predicated by who buys the building, they might decide to apply for planning permission which could take up to 12 months, then they may allow us to remain on until such a time when they are ready to move.

“I just couldn’t call the date being honest but I’d imagine it’ll be within the next six to eight months,” Mr Higgins added.
