GARDAI have arrested a teenager in the run-up to Christmas in connection with a hit-and-run collision in a County Limerick village.

The victim, a man aged in his 30s, was out walking his dog at the time. He was struck by a silver BMW in the SuperValu car park in Castleconnell at around 11.30am on Sunday, October 19. The car was then driven off at speed.

The injured party, who is from the locality, received emergency first aid at the scene before being rushed to hospital with “serious injuries”.

It is understood the victim, who was in the vicinity of another man, was not the intended target of the offending driver.

A major garda investigation commenced. Gardai located the vehicle involved in the hit-and-run collision later that Sunday afternoon in a different car park in Castleconnell, near the Shannon River. The driver had escaped on foot.

An attempt was made to burn out the car but it is understood that the BMW was not extensively damaged. It was towed away for forensic examination by gardai.

Gardai have now confirmed a male, aged in his late teens, was arrested on Wednesday, December 17.

A garda spokesperson said it is in relation to the ongoing investigation into an incident of "endangerment" that occurred on October 19 in Castleconnell, County Limerick.

“He has since been released from garda custody and a file will be prepared for the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP),” said a garda spokesperson.

An offence of endangerment is contrary to Section 13 of the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person Act, 1997. It relates to a person who “intentionally or recklessly engages in conduct which creates a substantial risk of death or serious harm to another”.

The garda investigation is ongoing.
