GARDAI are appealing for witnesses following a Christmas Eve tragedy on one of the busiest roads in County Limerick.

In an appeal, they say the fatal road traffic collision, involving a car and a truck, occurred on the N20, between Banogue and O'Rourke's Cross, at approximately 2am.

"The collision involved a lorry and a car. The driver of the car was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver of the lorry, a male in his 20s, was conveyed to University Hospital Limerick for the treatment of non-life threatening injuries," said a garda spokesperson.

Motorists are being advised the scene is currently preserved for examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators. The N20 road remains closed between O’Rourke’s Cross and Banogue and gardai are advising motorists to avoid the area.

Any witnesses to the collision or those with video footage are asked to come forward.

"Anyone who was travelling on the N20 in the Bruree area between 1:40am and 2:15am is asked to make contact with investigating gardaí. Road users with camera footage, including dash-cam, are asked to make that footage available," said a spokesperson.

Gardaí can be contacted at the Newcastle West station on 069 20650, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda station.

Investigations are ongoing.
