Excitement builds in Limerick ahead of mammoth weekend of sport

HUGE support is required ahead of one of the biggest sporting weekends on the local calendar as the Limerick senior hurling and Munster Rugby teams both compete in momentous matches.

Munster Rugby take on the DHL Stormers of South Africa in the United Rugby Championship (URC) final in a bid to be the only Irish provincial team to take home silverware this season as the Limerick senior hurling squad look to gain a crucial victory over Cork to stay in the All-Ireland championship.

Thousands of Munster fans are expected to travel to South Africa this weekend to support the red giants ahead of their battle against South Africa’s Stormers.

The sold-out match is expected to see 50,000 Stormers fans versus approximately 5,000 Munster fans at the DHL Stadium in Cape Town but those unable to travel to the game are sure to be cheering Munster on from home.

A 30-man Munster Rugby squad travelled to South Africa on Monday with the 23-man match-day team to be named this Friday. The end-of-season game will be shown on TG4 with kick-off at 5.30pm, this Saturday, May 27.

Meanwhile, Limerick hurling manager John Kiely believes Limerick have “great support” as they seek a crucial win against Cork on Sunday.

“It will all be required,” he said.

An estimated 40,000 supporters are expected to head to the TUS Gaelic Grounds on Sunday for the 4pm showdown. Both the Mackey and the uncovered stand at the 44,000 (approx) capacity stadium are understood to be sold out and several thousand tickets are sold for the City End Terrace.

The match is pivotal for both teams, as a win for either will secure at least a third-place spot in the fiercely competitive Munster Championship and continuation into the All-Ireland championship. The loser’s season will end on Sunday.

Limerick and Cork have already met this year in both team’s opener of the Allianz Hurling League First Division where Cork clinched a one-point victory. However, Limerick went on to win the overall league.

The boys in green also have a chance of securing a spot in the Munster Hurling Championship Final against Clare as long as Waterford secure victory over Tipperary, also on Sunday.
