Limerick motorists urged to exercise caution when parking following spate of thefts

There have been a number of thefts from cars in Limerick in recent weeks

GARDAI are urging motorists to think about how and where they park their cars - particularly in larger towns and in the city.

A number of parked cars have been targeted across Limerick in recent weeks and gardai fear more could be targeted over the bank holiday weekend.

"Consider walking or taking the bus but if you must bring your car in, park your car legally and do not block an entrance. Check the handle of the car before you walk away to ensure it is locked. Do not leave anything in the car that could attract the attention of a criminal," said divisional crime prevention officer Sergeant Ber Leetch.

"Three cars had their passenger windows smashed in the past few days -  a few coins were taken from a car in Athlunkard Street (in the city); a phone was taken from a car on Summer Street (in the city) and a wallet was taken from a car in Newcastle West," she added.

In addition to the value of stolen property, car windows can cost hundreds to replace so the garda advice is to double check that your car is completely empty before you leave it.
