Green Limerick: UL to host global marine conference

University of Limerick will host the Oceans 2023 conference in June

LIMERICK is set to play host to an international conference where the marine community will meet and discuss relevant topics and current trends while creating a community of learners and influencers who consistently advance research, practices, and policies for the marine field.

Oceans is a bi-annual event for global marine technologists, engineers, students, government officials, lawyers, and advocates and will be held at the University of Limerick (UL).

Approximately 1,000 industry professionals are expected to arrive in the riverside city for the event which will host over 100 exhibitors this summer.

“The Oceans Limerick event is all about opportunities and experience,” exhibit chair, Ray O’Brien said in a promotional video for the conference.

“We’re going to create opportunities for you to meet with your clients, look at new advanced technologies, network and potentially create new business opportunities.

“The atmosphere here is second to none as you get to experience the River Shannon as it cuts through two counties,” Mr O’Brien added.

Oceans 2023 is the flagship event for the Marine Technology Society (MTS) and the IEEE Oceanic Engineering Society.

The MTS promotes awareness, understanding, and the advancement and application of marine technology while the IEEE’s main vision is to be a collaborative community working towards a safe, healthy, and productive ocean.

The theme of the Limerick conference is Blue Ocean Planet Earth, addressing sustainable development into the future by engaging with the ocean’s resources in a way that protects the environment.

“Ireland and many nations have significant targets in this area,” Professor Daniel Toal, general chair of the event said.

“Oceans brings together an international or global community interested in all things ocean.

“We look forward to welcoming you to Oceans in Limerick,” he added.

Businesses, institutions, individual professionals, and students who are ocean engineers, technologists, policymakers, and educators are all welcome to take part in Oceans 2023.

UL has been described by organisers as having a “vibrant” community.

“We hope you have the experience of a lifetime here with us at Oceans Limerick,” Mr O’Brien added.

Oceans 2023 takes place at UL from Monday, June 5 to Thursday, June 8.
