Lifebuoy

SENSORS to discourage vandalism and removal of potentially life saving equipment has been implemented around Limerick city and county.

25 lifebuoys have been kitted with new sensors to notify Limerick City and County Council (LCCC) when a lifebuoy is removed, in use, or even ‘missing’.

Areas such as Shannon Bridge, Harveys Quay, Steamboat Quay all have sensors as these are hotspots where assistance is required for someone in the water.

A spokesperson for LCCC said that often, lifebuoys are removed “for no reason” other than vandalism. “Shannon Fields and Musgraves Bridge also have sensors, as these lifebuoys are subject to vandalism and removal for no reason.

“No emergency calls have been received to these areas recently, so any replacements have been made due to the sensor being activated. It would therefore suggest that there is no other reason as to why these lifebuoys are being removed, aside from vandalism.”

When the sensor is activated a text message and email are sent to the Council and we arrange for the lifebuoy to be replaced as soon as possible in case of emergency.

Part of the technology is a “Dashboard”, where the council can see if the lifebuoy stays in a “Missing” status or an “in service” status, where someone may return the lifebuoy to the box.
