A COLLECTION of adventurous stories penned by primary school students will sprout in Limerick this week.
Titled ‘Story Seeds: Adventures Across Limerick & Beyond,’ the book will be launched this Thursday in Thomond Park on the occasion of World Book Day.
With its creative pilot project, Story Seeds encouraged over 600 children to use their imagination and contribute to a collection of stories focusing on the positive aspects of their communities, including students from four Limerick schools.
Overall, 10 stories were written by students from Limerick and Tipperary schools, including Corpus Christi Primary School, Thomond Primary School, Our Lady Queen of Peace NS, Roxboro and St Mary’s NS, Bishop Street.
The initiative aims to support young people to write stories while enabling them to understand their own life story.
The project is one of many run by Fighting Words, a creative writing organisation founded by Roddy Doyle and Seán Love.
The Youth Libraries Group online seminar series was the source of inspiration for the staff at Watch House Cross Library, who were determined to bring the initiative to Limerick.
Coincidentally, Limerick was a location where Fighting Words were keen to become involved in, particularly in areas that are recognised as disadvantaged.
For eight weeks, students from local schools attended a series of workshops facilitated by volunteers, library staff and illustrators.
As part of the project, the students chose characters and identified well-known local amenities to create the bones of a story.
The book will be launched at 10.30am in Thomond Park stadium where each student who contributed to the book will be given a copy.
