The Seoda choir perform at a recent concert
A LIMERICK chamber choir is to hold a fundraising concert next week for the victims of the earthquake in Turkey and Syria.
Tens of thousands of people have tragically died following the incident, while donations of aid have been pouring in from across the world.
The disaster has prompted the Seoda Chamber Choir – Limerick’s only all-female choral ensemble – to give a fundraising concert to raise money for the aid agency Unicef.
It will be held at St Mary’s Church in Kilbane, near the village of Ardnacrusha on Thursday, March 9 at 8pm. The church’s Eircode is V94 HX75.
Under the direction of Máire Keary-Scanlon, the choir will perform some old favourites – hopefully many of which will be recognisable to the audience – as well as one or two lesser-known pieces.
She said: “The opportunity to help people in any way, no matter how small, towards the suffering in Turkey and Syria following the devastating earthquakes, is something we are so happy to do, and we are sure that people will give generously and whole-heartedly.”
Seoda will be accompanied on piano by Eoin Scanlon, and a young cellist, Liam Hunka. The church has recently undergone a refurbishment.
Danielle Abraham who is a member of Seoda and a committee which helped raise funds to refurbish St Mary’s Church said: “We had intended marking International Women’s Day with a concert and the events in Turkey and Syria have focused our minds on what really matters.”
Although entry to the concert next week is free, there will be a voluntary collection, with all money going to Unicef, which provides humanitarian and developmental aid to children worldwide.
