CALLS HAVE been made for Limerick City and County Council to follow their neighbours' example to stamp out the “scourge” of dog poo in the city, writes Frances Fitzpatrick.

Councillor Joe Leddin submitted a motion at a recent Metropolitan District meeting that the local authority would look into emulating a campaign run by Galway City Council entitled 'Clean it up, you dirty pup'.

The campaign has seen a 55% reduction in reports of fouling in the areas chosen for their campaign.

Cllr Leddin said the issue was “evident” across many areas of Limerick city for years.

“In Galway they have stencilled specific areas where there were high incidence rates and they also gave people spray paint to use on the poo to make it florescent so people wouldn't step on it.”

Cllr Leddin said that it costs between €700 and €1,000 to install a dog poo bin in Limerick.
