Second University Hospital Limerick protest organised

Second University Hospital Limerick protest organised

Protesters marching down Henry Street in Limerick city against the conditions at UHL on January 21, 2023

“IF IT MEANS marching every week, we’re prepared to do that,” a passionate Mike Daly said following the announcement of a second UHL Protest to be organised this year.

The previous UHL Protest held in January was organised by Mr Daly and saw 11,000 people take to the streets of Limerick city centre against the conditions at UHL.

The plan for the upcoming protest is to have marchers start at the Crescent Shopping Centre and march all the way out to UHL rather than congregate in Arthur’s Quay Park like the previous demonstration.

Mr Daly said that the upcoming protest has been planned as the government promised the partial reopening of Ennis and Nenagh A&Es but that promise has not been fulfilled.

“The figures out there [in UHL] are still rocketing with 102 people on trolleys yesterday (Wednesday),” Mr Daly said.

“There’s nothing changing and as well as that, Leo Varadkar gave two contradictory stories, one to Mid-West Hospital Campaign (MWHC) about the possibility of reopening the A&Es and one to the media on the same day.

“They’re playing games and they took no notice of the 11,000 that came out the first time,” Mr Daly said.

Emotional and powerful speeches about personal experiences regarding overcrowding at UHL were shared at the previous protest.

According to the Protest of UHL Limerick Facebook page the upcoming protest “won’t be a big fanfare like last time, probably no bands, no big speeches afterwards, just a mass of people in town marching and congregating at UHL.”

Mr Daly believes “in order to get something done, you have to commit to something”.

“We have to push them over the line with this now because the government are ignoring the 11,000.

“If it means we have to go to the hospital doors every week on a weekly protest, well it’s all down to the people of Limerick now if they want to get behind that and show that we want the A&Es opened,” Mr Daly added.

Starting from Saturday, March 25, weekly protests against the current conditions at UHL will be organised.
