GARDAI are investigating an 'sinister' incident at an apartment in Limerick city.
A 21-year-old woman was asleep at her home in the Ennis Road area when she woke to find a man inside her apartment.
After he was disturbed, the man left the property with the woman's mobile phone and her wallet.
"She was very shaken and subsequently discovered that he had walked in through an unlocked back door," said divisional crime prevention officer Sergeant Ber Leetch.
"Locking your doors and securing your windows are basic crime prevention measures, doing this will protect your property but more importantly you and your family. Keeping your handbag, wallet, phone and car keys in a safe place that cannot be seen through a window or glass door is also sensible," she added.
Gardai say they are aware that criminals walk around houses at night, looking in windows for something worth stealing.
"If they see something, they check for unlocked windows and doors and as I have explained, walk in and help themselves," said Sgt Leetch.
