In Pictures: Monaleen come out on top in Limerick Leader Cup final

MONALEEN NS won the 2023 staging of the Limerick Leader Cup by defeating Doon CBS in a very competitive final in Mick Neville Park. Their first win in the competition since 2011.

"It was an excellent tournament, contested by the champions of the four Divisions of the county and a fitting end to the Cumann na mBunscol season," according to Brother James Dormer, Secretary of Allianz Cumann na mBunscol Luimnigh.

The semi- finals saw Doon CBS overcome West Limerick champions Ahalin NS while, Monaleen NS battled to a hard-fought victory over South Limerick kingpins Scoil Dean Cussen from Bruff.

Monaleen NS are holders of the county football shield and were hopeful of adding the hurling crown to their tally for the season.

Doon CBS is a school with a rich tradition in the Leader Cup and the Doon lads had similar ambitions. The Monaleen boys led at the break by 1-5 to 0-4.

Doon CBS took the game to their opponents after the interval and Monaleen NS goalkeeper Mark O’Grady pulled off three excellent saves to keep his goal intact.

Mark had lined out in goal for Limerick in the Primary Game the previous day and he showed his ability as a shot stopper when it mattered most to deny the Doon CBS forwards. Monaleen NS added two more goals and ran out winners on a scoreline of 3-8 to 0-8.

John Keogh, GAA correspondent of the Limerick Leader presented the treasured cup to Monaleen NS captain John Sheahan after the final.
