FORMER Limerick goalkeeper Barry Hennessy has been appointed head coach of the Meath senior hurling team for the 2026 season. Hennessy joins a backroom team that includes Tom Shine, Sean Corrigan, Dermot Moran, Graham Norton and Barry Reynolds, as the Royals continue under the management of Westmeath native Johnny Greville, who enters his second year in charge.
Westmeath, Kerry, Mayo, Laois, Meath, London and Derry will all compete in Division 2A of the National Hurling League. Last weekend, Meath just came up short against Wicklow in the Kehoe Cup final.
In 2025, Barry Hennessy guided Smith O'Briens to the Clare Intermediate Hurling Championship title last weekend. A goal deep into injury time from Cathal Stritch saw Smith O'Briens defeat Inagh Kilnamona 2-18 to 1-20 in the Clare Intermediate Hurling Championship final.
The Killaloe club will play Premier Intermediate Hurling in the 2026 season.Smith O’Briens will aim to build on their progress next year, as they now stand just one grade below senior hurling
The former Limerick goalkeeper has been building an impressive managerial CV. Hennessy was in charge of Kerry club Lixnaw last year and he has been involved with the Ardscoil Rís Dr Harty Cup teams in recent seasons.
The four time All-Ireland winner won four Munster senior hurling championship titles during his inter county career with Limerick from 2010 until 2022.
Hennessy announced his retirement from club hurling with Kilmallock in 2024. During his club career, the Kilmallock native won four Limerick Senior Hurling Championships.
