LIMERICK City and County Council has taken an important step towards creating a cleaner, more sustainable city centre with the appointment of sustainability and environment consultants, Meehan Green, to carry out a comprehensive feasibility study on waste management.
This study aims to identify practical solutions that make waste collection more efficient, environmentally friendly, and visually appealing, particularly in the city’s historic quarters, narrow streets, and busy retail districts.
Funded through the Mayoral Programme, the initiative will look closely at how waste is stored, presented, collected, and recycled in the city centre.
The study will consider options such as reducing the number of mobile bins cluttering streets and introducing permanent, aesthetically designed storage solutions, including dedicated waste sites or underground systems.
It will explore ways to improve waste segregation, minimise waste production, and streamline collection processes to reduce environmental impacts.

A key part of the project is engaging with those who know the city best, its residents. The Council is inviting city centre residents to share their experiences and ideas through an online survey.
Feedback will play a vital role in shaping solutions that are not only sustainable but also practical and inclusive, improving the appearance of streets while supporting Ireland’s commitment to EU recycling targets.
Limerick aims to set a new standard for urban waste management. The study represents a real opportunity to tackle operational challenges while enhancing the city’s historic character and quality of life for residents and visitors alike.
City centre residents can take part in the survey on MyPoint.
Those insights will influence how Limerick manages waste, ensuring the city becomes cleaner and more sustainable for all.
