When complete, Uisce Eireann will then advance the required statutory and regulatory approvals for the new infrastructure necessary to support social and economic growth, including the provision of housing.

These works will occur along the R518, Main Street, The Quay and in the vicinity of the existing pump station, between the tennis courts and the swimming pool. The project design team have scoped the necessary works to advance the design stage of the project. They include bore holes, ground penetration radar, trial pits and slit trenches.

Traffic management will be in place during this time to carry out the works safely  in the form of stop/go systems.

Minister Patrick O'Donovan, Minister of State Niall Collins and Cllr Ger Ward all welcomed the news. Mr O'Donovan  said: “I would call on Uisce Éireann to ensure that the project is given the upmost priority to ensure the project is delivered as soon as possible. This project is vital for Askeaton, as its delivery will enable the provision of greater housing in the area”.

Mr Collins said it will “unlock the potential  for new development in Askeaton”, ensure water quality in the   Deel river will be improved and protect biodiversity and wildlife. Cllr Ward said it is a hugely important project for “the future of the town”.

Uisce Eireann’s Programme Manager, Angus Hall said it is a significant investment for the area.

“Completion of the Askeaton Wastewater Treatment Plant Upgrade Project will deliver a fit-for-purpose treatment facility for generations to come allowing the local community to thrive,” said Mr Hall.
