Active Travel team delivers update on projects planned for Limerick

The Active Travel Limerick team has 22km of active travel infrastructure in the design phase, approximately 9km of infrastructure has been completed to date

THE ACTIVE Travel Limerick team has completed approximately 9km of active travel infrastructure in the city and county since the team was established.

The team, which was set up in the last three years, has a further 22km of active travel infrastructure in design.

There is approximately a further 10km of infrastructure in the metropolitan area and 1km in the county area has commenced the non-statutory consultation process.

The planning process has also commenced for a further 10km infrastructure and 1.85km is under construction.
Active Travel Limerick is seeking to get people out of the car when travelling.

Green Party councillor for Limerick City North, Saša Novak Uí Chonchúir is happy with how much infrastructure has been completed by the Active Travel team.

“We’ve gone from zero or a very low amount of active travel infrastructure to 9km since 2021 really when it all started,” she said.

“We’ve gone from one person planning to now having a team of 20 people. I am happy with how much has been delivered, realistically it’s hard to deliver it faster. There’s a couple of rapid deployment schemes as they call them such as Brookville Avenue that can be practically delivered overnight when it comes to works but they still need a certain level of planning and consultation,” she added.

The Active Travel team is working on connecting the city centre with key areas throughout the city including University Hospital Limerick, the University of Limerick, TUS, Mary Immaculate College, the Crescent Shopping Centre, Limerick School of Art and Design, the National Technology Park and residential areas across the city.

According to Ms Novak Uí Chonchúir, Limerick will be a bit of a construction site over the next 12 months in what she described as a “short term pain for a long term gain”.

According to a spokesperson for the Active Travel team, “22km of cycle lanes are currently under design within the Active Travel department in Limerick City and County Council and are anticipated to come before statutory processes in due course. This figure of 22km encompasses Active Travel project designs throughout the city and county.”
