Verizon's new centre of excellence will be located in the 1BQ building which is nearing completion on Limerick's riverfront
LIMERICK has received an early Christmas present with a US multinational company unveiling plans to create more than 400 jobs in the city centre.
Verizon, one of the world’s leading communications providers, has announced it's opening a global centre of excellence at Bishop’s Quay in the heart of the city.
The firm has taken 10,000 square metres of the 1BQ riverside office and residential development which is in the final stages of construction.
It’s anticipated Verizon will move in during the opening months of the new year, with bosses at the company already ramping up a recruitment drive locally.
IDA Ireland, which has helped bring the positions here, has said ultimately “hundreds” of jobs will be created at Verizon in Limerick over the next two years.
“The centre of excellence will bring together key functions in a creative, collaborative environment that leverages global talent and maximises our shared services model to best deliver for our businesses globally,” said Craig Silliman, president, Verizon Global Services.
“Grouping these functions in a world-class centre will improve effectiveness and efficiency to deliver best-in-class results for our customers, employees and partners.”
The 1BQ development is being delivered to Limerick by Kirkland Investments, a firm headed by Rudi Butler, the son of well-known former city developer Robert Butler.
Enterprise Minister Simon Coveney (pictured above with Heidi Hammer, Verizon Global Services; Craig Silliman, Verizon Global Services and Michael Lohan, ceo of IDA Ireland) is due in Limerick this Monday to formally announce the good news.
He said: “One of the world’s leading providers of technology and communications services has chosen Limerick for its new global centre of excellence. This is a significant commitment and endorsement of Ireland and in particular the skilled workforce in Limerick.”
IDA Ireland chief executive Michael Lohan added: “The selection of Limerick for this centre of excellence and the creation of roles across multiple strategic functions will position the Mid-West and Ireland well for future investment in the sector.”
Positions on offer include financial operations, strategy and network engineering.
