Tributes paid to Limerick businessman after unexpected passing

TRIBUTES have been paid to Limerick businessman Dr. Aidan Spooner who has passed away. 

Dr. Spooner of Tanglewood, Adare was originally from Roscrea but had also lived in Clonmel Mews, Ennis. He passed away unexpectedly on Friday, February 24. 

It is reported that Dr. Spooner died suddenly while on a golfing holiday in Spain. 

In Limerick, Dr. Spooner was known best in his role as former Director of Element Six, De Beers Group.

Dr. Spooner played Fitzgibbon Cup with UCD, minor hurling with Tipperary and was part of the Roscrea team that won the 1971 All Ireland Senior Club Hurling title defeating St. Rynagh’s of Offaly in the final.

Lahinch Golf Club paid tribute to the regular golfer who would often be seen teeing off at their links on a Friday. 

"Aidan and his late wife, Rosaleen, joined Lahinch Golf Club in 1985. Over the intervening years, Aidan was a regular golfer on the Links and was also a member of the Crows & Prawns Golf Society which is still going strong today and are a constant fixture on the Castle Course every Friday.

"An elegant and softly spoken gentleman, Aidan was a man full of integrity who had time for everybody.

"His gentle smile, genial personality and caring nature will be remembered by all who knew him and he will be deeply missed by his many friends at Lahinch Golf Club."

Husband of Laura (Casey) and the late Rosaleen. To the inexpressible grief of Laura and his children Lynn, Brian, Sarah and Laura’s children Meghan, Evan, Orin and all his grandchildren, daughters in law and sons in law. Deeply missed by his sisters Anne and Nuala, his brothers Jody and Liam and extended family.

Dr. Spooner will be reposing at his home (Tanglewood, Adare, Co. Limerick) on Wednesday 8th March from 5.00pm to 7.00pm.

The funeral cortege will arrive at SS Peter and Paul Cathedral, Ennis on Thursday 9th March for Requiem Mass at 12 noon followed by Cremation Service at Shannon Crematorium at 2.00pm.
