TWO CASES of fraud-related scams have been reported in Limerick, with scammers now posing as gardaí.
Sergeant Michelle O’Halloran, crime prevention officer, Henry St garda station, has warned that “fraudulent activities are on the rise” following two individuals losing money via phone scams in recent weeks.
Firstly, a woman in her 40s received a phone call from someone claiming to be from the Garda Fraud Unit.
“The caller informed her that fraudulent transactions had occurred on her bank account and instructed her to download an app for assistance,” said Sgt O’Halloran.
“Trusting the caller, she followed the instructions, provided her bank details and sent photographic identification. Subsequently, money was stolen from her account.”

The second case refers to a man, also in his 40s, who received a SMS text message that appeared to be from his financial institution, warning of potential fraudulent activity on his bank account.
“The victim followed the message advice and called the phone number provided on the text message,” said Sgt O’Halloran.
“While on the call, he shared his six-digit security code for his online banking. Unfortunately, this allowed criminals to access his account and he suffered a significant financial loss.”
Offering advice for people in Limerick, Sgt O’Halloran said “it is crucial to independently verify any requests for personal information”.
“Do not trust messages from previous conversations, even if they seem legitimate. Always double-check the phone numbers and perform your own enquiries.”
