IN A targeted effort to combat underage drinking, gardaí, assisted by two teenagers, conducted a test purchasing operation which has resulted in two Limerick premises facing prosecution.
During the initiative, a number of off-licence premises were visited in Limerick city this Saturday.
According to gardai, two premises failed the inspection and sold alcohol to a 16-year-old. These premises will now face prosecution.
“Members from Community Policing in Henry Street Garda Station with the assistance of two 15 and 16 year olds today conducted a test purchasing operation, whereby a number of off-licence premises were visited in Limerick city,” a notice on An Garda Síochána Limerick's Facebook page reads.
“Two premises failed the inspection and sold alcohol to a 16-year-old. These premises will now face prosecution,” the post added.

In Ireland, selling alcohol to anyone under 18 is illegal and it can result in prosecution for the business.
Individuals must provide valid identification (such as a passport, driver’s license, or Garda age card) to verify their age when buying alcohol.
