Van burnt out in third criminal damage incident in Limerick town in weeks

The van burnt out in broad daylight on Saturday

GARDAI are investigating the third incident of criminal damage in Kilfinane in a matter of weeks.

A burglary took place at the old convent site in Kilfinane, which is being converted into social housing accommodation, between July 20 and 22. Vandals spray painted areas of the build during the incident

A few days later, The Maple Ballroom, as it was known, on Barrack Street was damaged in a fire on July 25.

Then on Saturday of this weekend, a van was burnt out in broad daylight. Kilmallock Fire and Rescue and Service responded to the blaze.

A garda spokesperson said: "Gardaí and emergency services attended the scene of a fire outside a property in Kilfinane which occurred on Saturday, August 17 at approximately 4.50pm. Investigations are ongoing."

Kilfinane Community Council posted on its Facebook page on Saturday: A number of weeks ago, as ye all know, there was a fire in the Maple Ballroom. We are aware it was started by someone, then there was the incident of vandalism in the old convent.

"Today the fire brigade had to be called again as a van at the back of a private residence was set on fire. This is very upsetting for the family and should not have happened."

It continues: "We are asking people if you have any information in relation to any of the incidents to please contact the guards in Bruff. Can you all be vigilant in the community going forward and report any concerns as these incidents are getting out of control. It is very disappointing to see this happening in our community and it has to stop."

If anybody has any information they are asked to contact gardai in Bruff on 061 382940.
