THE COOK Medical Mini Marathon returns to Limerick on Sunday, bringing thousands of participants together for one of the Mid-West’s most anticipated community events.
Taking place this October 5, the theme is inclusivity, with the reminder that whether you run, jog, or walk, there is a place on the starting line for everyone.
Among the thousands on the startling line are two women whose journeys reflect the spirit of the mini marathon.

Ilayda Bozveli, from Dooradoyle and Tina Buckley from Granville Park have each faced life-changing medical challenges, yet both are determined to take on the marathon.
Earlier this year, a scooter accident left Ilayda with a badly broken ankle, requiring major surgery and months of rehabilitation.
With her family in Turkey and unable to travel, she faced the entire ordeal alone in Ireland.
“I had to become my own caregiver,” Ilayda explained. “From surgery, to moving house while still in a cast, it was one challenge after another. But I made a promise to my friend Dee that one day we would run a marathon together and I was determined to keep it.”
Her recovery was long and difficult, having to re-learn how to walk before she could even think about running. But nearly a year later, Ilayda is stronger than ever and ready for her first-ever marathon.
“Running makes me feel alive,” she says. “I’ve never felt this strong or this proud of myself.”
Another first-time participant is Tina, who faced a sudden and life-threatening health crisis in March 2024.
After having been rushed into an emergency surgery for a bowel blockage, the doctors were forced to remove her entire colon and fit Tina with a stoma.
“I was in very bad pain and very sick,” Tina said. “Now I have a bag attached to my stomach for life. But I’m hoping to run the Cook Mini Marathon this year.”
Both İlayda and Tina's participation in this year’s Mini Marathon is a reminder that the race is not just about distance, it’s about overcoming obstacles.
As the starting line draws near, the Cook Medical Mini Marathon continues to raise vital funds for local charities across the Mid-West.
Participants are encouraged to run, walk, or jog in support of a cause close to their heart. Every step taken helps make a difference in the community.
The mini marathon commences at 12pm on Sunday, at the University of Limerick with participants walking, jogging or running the 5km and 10km courses.
