THE son of a man whose father died after a brave battle with Motor Neurone Disease (MND) is embarking on a cycle along the coast of Ireland to raise awareness of the disease and raise money for charity.

In January 2010, John Twomey lost his fight to the debilitating disease. His son Jerry Twomey from Dooradoyle has set himself a challenge to fundraise for the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association (IMNDA) in memory of his late father.

“We met angels and helpers in many forms while Dad suffered his illness with dignity,” said Jerry. “The Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association was of immeasurable support to us and are an endlessly worthy charity to go the distance for. I have been training hard since January and at times I've felt that completing this challenge is way beyond me”.

The Dooradoyle native continued: “What better way to honour the memory of my brilliant Dad than to face a challenge bigger than I feel possible. I am also doing this in support of everyone who is, or has been, affected by this devastating disease.”

Jerry previously completed a swim challenge and a 10km run in all 32 counties. “He managed to fight this disease somehow with the biggest smile on his face even though he was a paralysed man unable to communicate with us towards the end... He was just incredible and that's why I want to remember him and keep on doing these challenges,” said Jerry about his inspiring father.

Jerry is reaching out to everyone in the MND family along with sports clubs, cycling clubs, and social groups to join him along the way – everyone is welcome. “With company the cycling feels half as long and twice as easy” he said.

“I would be delighted to hook up and chat with people wherever they are. Just get in touch and I will do my best to be there”.
