A SPONSORED abseil down the side of Thomond Park is to take place next month to raise money to replace the roof of Askeaton Community Hall.
The Askeaton-Ballysteen Community Council are organising the event, on Saturday, June 21, next, and are urging people to take part.
Speaking at the launch of the fundraiser in the community hall itself, Marian Costello of the group said: “All funds raised will be going towards this building right here. Our main aim is fixing the roof.
“The hall is 73 years old and needs our help,” she added.

Askeaton Community Hall was first opened in 1952, and in that time has become a focal point of activities in the town.
“When the door was opened here in 1952, it literally had four walls. Prior to that, cards, drama and dancing were all held in the library,” Marian added.
The community council was formed in 1948 specifically to lobby for the community centre.
“It is integral to Askeaton and the surrounding areas. It holds many memories. You may have come here to Irish dancing, the youth club, scouts, beavers. You might have even had your first kiss here at a teenage disco! It’s a special place, and we want to preserve this special place for years to come,” added Marian.
Today, Askeaton Community Hall is home to the local Community Enterprise scheme, plus programmes run by the youth organisation Foróige, Limerick Youth Service and West Limerick Resources.
Also using the hall are the Askeaton/Ballysteen Active Retirement Group and the loyal Malayan group.
Sports clubs, personal trainers, art groups and drama groups use the hall through the year.
People who plan to scale the heights of Thomond Park are being asked to raise €400 in return for the chance to get in the saddle.
