KILFINANE Coshlea Historical Society (KCHS) which is celebrating its silver jubilee this year has published its seventh journal.

In over 104 pages it recounts recent events such as the excitement of Limerick winning its first hurling All-Ireland in 45 years in 2018. The experience of Covid 19 is remembered, and a local man also describes his work with refugees in the Middle East.

The journal recalls the dramatic events at Kilfinane Primary School in 2012 which were recorded in an award-winning documentary on RTE Radio.

It also recognises the great work being done by the local Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann since its foundation in 2015.

The contribution of Castle Oliver to the area and how it survived the ravages of the 19th and 20th centuries is remembered.

Kilfinane Coshlea cannot forget the martyrdom of Staker Wallace in 1798. Two articles are written by some of Staker’s descendants who have visited the area in recent years, often hosted by members of the Historical Society. They write with great passion about their ancestor and their desire to discover more about him.

The journal explores the ancient past through its work of locating and researching Standing Stones in the area.

Few people realise that one of the biggest finds of old silver pieces in Ireland happened in the Coshlea area, near Martinstown, in 1940. This was the discovery of what is known as the Balline Hoard. The silver lay hidden for over 1500 years. It's now the second largest silver collection in the National Museum in Dublin.

The 2024 Kilfinane Coshlea Historical Society Journal will be launched at a special concert in the Old Chapel Rooms in Kilfinane on Friday, November 15 at 7.30 pm. Free Admission.

The Journal costs €20 and is available from ger.raftery@gmail.com.
