MEMBERS of Adare Tidy Towns are celebrating after being awarded a gold medal in this year's competition.

The overall results were announced by Minister for Rural and Community Development, Heather Humphreys at an event in Croke Park, Dublin this Friday lunchtime.

Adare Tidy Towns also won the county prize for Limerick having been awarded 369 points by the adjudicators. In addition, the group was highly commended in the 'Young Persons in Tidy Towns' category and will receive €500 having won an EPA Circular Economy award.

Galbally Tidy Towns came second in Limerick in the main competition while Ardpatrick Tidy Towns was third. Both Groups retained their bronze medals as did Limerick City Tidy Towns and Castleconnell Tidy Towns.

Elsewhere, Glenroe Tidy Towns received an endeavour award for being the most-improved entrant in Limerick while Askeaton Ballysteen Natural Heritage will receive €1,000 having won a regional award in the 'Waters and Communities" category.

The Adjudicator’s report for Adare, which saw its points total increase from 356 to 369, notes the wide support that Adare Tidy Towns has from individuals and other organisations in the community.

"It is remarkable to read of the myriad groups that support Adare TT and that then ultimately make Adare a town to be proud of. Everyone from business, sport, and schools, to mention a few, seem to have an involvement in your project. This is a community at its best," states the adjudicator in their report.

The report also notes the importance of the proposed Adare By-Pass and the impact will have in reducing pollution in the village.

"In Adare, you have the problem of more than 17,000 vehicles passing through the town each day. This causes pollution and can damage the health of your population. It is good to see that you are working with Limerick City and County Council to build a By-Pass of Adare to deal with the problem. Not alone will a by-pass deal with the pollution issue, it will also make Adare a better place to live, work and play in."

The overall winner of the SuperValu Tidy Towns competition was Abbeyleix in County Laois.
