Council seek observations for draft litter management plan in Limerick

The draft plan aims to combat litter problems in Limerick

LIMERICK City and County Council (LCCC) are inviting observations and submissions for consideration in the Draft Limerick Litter Management Plan (DLLMP) 2023-2026.

The DLLMP aims to combat litter in Limerick city and county. This plan builds upon the successes of previous initiatives on effective litter prevention.

Outlined in the DLLMP are the objectives and actions about awareness, prevention, control, and enforcement of littering from 2023 to 2026.

Recognising the persistent challenge of litter at both local and national levels, the focus remains on reducing and managing litter to provide a cleaner and more attractive environment for the people of Limerick.

“While the council acknowledges its pivotal role in enforcement, it emphasises the essential cooperation of the entire community to amplify awareness of litter's detrimental effects,” a spokesperson for LCCC said on the MyPoint website.

“The council recognises that the strength of our collective effort is crucial for successfully eradicating litter. Individuals and businesses alike play pivotal roles in generating and disposing of litter conscientiously, and this plan underscores that shared responsibility,” the spokesperson added.

Under Section 12 of the Litter Pollution Act 1997, local authorities are required to make and implement a three-year litter management plan.

“Together, we can create a cleaner and more sustainable environment in Limerick for current and future generations,” the spokesperson said.

Submissions will be accepted until Friday, January 19 and can be submitted online, by email to litterplan@limerick.ie or in writing to the Domestic Waste and Litter Team at LCCC’s offices in Dooradoyle.
