Devastating soaring graph of vandalism - Mayor Condell
WHEN she spoke at the celebrations on Saturday night last in the Municipal Technical Institute, marking the 21st anniversary of the foundation of the Boys’ Brigade in Limerick, the Mayor of Limerick, councillor Mrs Frances Condell, referred to the lack of interest “by our youth in civic affairs and the devastating soaring of the graph of vandalism in our city”.
The mayor referred to many aspects that have combined to mould the minds of modern youth, who are confronted by complexities and personal problems which did not appear to exist “in our own day of the same age group”.
“As mayor of Limerick and as one appalled by the lack of interest by our youth in civic affairs and by the devastating soaring of the graph of vandalism in our city, I feel that you, as a company, depicting youth as we wish it to be, should consider the introduction of simple lectures on civics and citizenship into your weekly activities, where even your youngest members, the Life Boys, can be reached through simple media and visual aids, which will explain true Christian citizenship to those under your care. A child should be taught to have respect for their city.”
Limerick Rose resembles US first lady Jackie Kennedy
IT WAS “house full” notices in Cruise’s Hotel on Saturday night when the Limerick candidate for the Rose of Tralee contest was chosen after lengthy deliberation by the five judges.
Their choice eventually devolved on 18 year-old Miss Betty O’Connell, Killonahan, Patrickswell, Co Limerick.
Judging from applause at which the verdict was received it appeared to be a very popular one. The resemblance of Miss O’Connell to Mrs Jacqueline Kennedy, wife of the US president, is stated to be very marked.
Prior to the selection of the Rose, a large number of guests were entertained to dinner by the festival of Kerry committee, at which Mr Denis O’Riordan, president, presided.
Later the Mayor of Limerick attended the dance and presented the sash and a cheque for £20 to the winner and congratulated her on her success and extended best wishes for the final.
Miss O’Connell’s father, Mr Thomas O’Connell, comes from Newtownsandes (Moyvane) Co Kerry, and he is a postman employed in a Patrickswell store. There were 18 competitors in all, each tastefully attired and looking very attractive.
