SLIDESHOW: Limerick boxing duo Paddy Donovan and Martin Keenan lose Elite Final bouts

Limerick boxing duo of Paddy Donovan (OLOL) and Martin Keenan (Rathkeale BC) both lost their Elite Final bouts last night at the National Stadium in Dublin.

Defending welterweight champion Kieran Molloy retained his title after a pulsating all southpaw battle with Limerick’s Paddy Donovan. Molloy took home his second successive 69kg belt on a unanimous decision, but Donovan asked massive questions of the champion in all three rounds, in what was the fight of the night.

The Treaty City lefty, one of Ireland’s most stylish fighters, found the target with some beautiful shots in all three rounds, but Molloy, working overtime, drilled down to deliver his own punches in an absorbing encounter in what some are calling the fight of the season so far.

Indeed both panelists on the night for TG4, Ken Egan and former Champion of the World, Andy Lee, gave the fight to Donovan, such was the tightness of the call.

The final fight of the night, saw Dean Gardiner (Clonmel) beat Martin Keenan (Rathkeale) 5-0 in the 91+kg final. Fellow Rathkeale fighter Nell Fox won her 80+kg title on a W/O.
