'An attack on democracy' - Taoiseach slams 'disgusting' threats against election candidate

Simon Harris says he's 'sick and tired' of attempts to intimidate

The Taoiseach Simon Harris has strongly criticised the actions of those who attempt to intimidate or threaten candidates who are seeking election to political roles.

There have been a number of recent incidents, across the country, involving individuals who are contesting next month's elections, which take place on Friday, June 7.

Several incidents are under garda investigation including one relating to Cllr Daniel Butler who is one of 15 candidates hoping to be elected as the new directly-elected Mayor of Limerick.

Posts published on social media platform TikTok included details of his family home and called for people to target the property and to smash the windows.

Speaking while canvassing in Limerick city this Sunday afternoon, the Taoiseach said such behaviour cannot be tolerated and that those who make such threats should face the full rigours of the law.

"I think the threats made against Daniel Butler and his family and his family home are disgusting and an attack on democracy," he told reporters.

"How dare these thugs behave in such a fashion, I know the matter has been reported to An Garda Siochana but I'm quite frankly sick and tired though of this situation where a very small number of people seek to intimidate people seeking election," he added.
