LIMERICK Civil Defence volunteers were honoured for their dedication and community service at the organisation’s annual awards ceremony, held at its base on the Dock Road. The event celebrated a year marked by significant training achievements, emergency support, and longstanding commitment from members across the county.
One of the evening’s highest honours went to Paul O’Grady, who received a 40-year Long Service Medal in recognition of four decades of voluntary service. Oriena Linehan was presented with a 30-year medal, while a number of volunteers were acknowledged for reaching 10 and 20 years of contribution.

Civil Defence Officer Cecilia O’Flaherty described the awards night as “the culmination of all the training the volunteers have done in the past 12 months,” noting that this year saw the largest intake of new members since Covid. Twenty recruits joined in 2024, completing basic training before progressing into specialist areas.
Certificates were also presented to 30 volunteers who completed more than 10 certified courses during 2024/2025, and commemorative medals were given to those unable to attend the organisation’s recent 75th anniversary event at University College Cork.
