SEÁN O’Sullivan has been named the Limerick Person of the Month for his accomplishments in the world of science.
The BT Young Scientist winner accepted the award at a special presentation at the Clayton Hotel.
The Coláiste Chiaráin student said winning this esteemed prize is “an honour, an absolute honour”.
“Since the BT Young Scientist so much unexpected things continue to happen and I am incredibly grateful to the judging committee for having selected me,” he added.
Following his success at the BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition (BTYSTE), the 17 year old was given the honour of being selected as the grand marshal of Limerick city’s St Patrick’s Day parade.

Feeling “unbelievable” about being chosen as Limerick Person of the Month, he thanked the people around him for “all of their incredible support as I move from this stage at the BT Young Scientist to EUCYS”.
As the winner of the BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition (BTYSTE), Seán will be representing Ireland at the European Union Contest for Young Scientists (EUCYS) in September in the European City for Science 2024 – Katowice, Poland.
After EUCYS, Seán’s focus will turn to the Leaving Certificate. Once that hurdle is passed, he hopes to stay in the world of science and study Maths, Physics or Computer Science at third level.
“After there, I’m not sure,” he explains, “I’d like to stay curious and continue exploring all of the different interests that I have… things are changing so quickly that I just want to keep as open a mind as possible”.
Seán’s winning project, VerifyMe: A new approach to authorship attribution in the post-ChatGPT era, considered the challenges of author verification in the context of the significant improvements in Artificial Intelligence (AI).
He developed a new approach to author authentication that identifies stylistic differences to verify authorship.
The Limerick Person of the Month award is sponsored by the Limerick Leader, media agency Southern, and the Clayton Hotel.
