THERE WAS palpable relief in the tenth count for the Cappamore-Kilmallock area for Sinn Féin Cllr PJ Carey who said he really wasn’t sure where he would stand.
Speaking to Limerick Live moments after he retained his seat, he said: “I feel great, I was worried a little bit yesterday I have to say.”
He thanked his family, friends, the party and all who campaigned for him and helped him behind the scenes.
Nationally, Sinn Féin had been polling in around 25%, but the actual outlook with real time votes has been far less favourable.
Flying the flag solo, Cllr Carey is the only Sinn Féin councillor who has secured a seat across all of the County Limerick areas.
“It was a poor day for Sinn Féin, but we had a poor day five years ago and came back a few months later,” he told Limerick Live.
He added that he’s confident that Joanne Collins will do the party proud in the next general election.
