BREAKING: Cllr Martin Ryan inspired by ill daughter who 'fought the fight'

Cappamore man elected on first count

CLLR MARTIN Ryan gave his mum Phyllis a big hug after he was elected in the Cappamore-Kilmallock Municipal District.

"I'm very proud. He's the best," beamed Phyllis, early on Sunday morning at Limerick Racecourse.

The Cappamore man received 2,059 number ones, thus exceeding the quota of 2,053.

"It's such an honour to think that the whole community across the county thought so much of me," said Cllr Ryan, who acknowledged it had been an emotional journey for him and his family.

At one point, he concedes he though about not running due to one of his children falling ill.

"We had a tough year. We had a daughter who was ill but thankfully she fought the fight. She's a tough fighter and I suppose it just showed me that we all fight the fight, and that's what we're doing here today.

"Our fight now is for community, and that's what I'm about, fighting for community and fighting for family," said Cllr Ryan, who paid tribute to his fantastic family, friends and supporters.

"I'm proud of every single one of them. I don't know how I can repay them because they're an absolutely fantastic group of people, and all the people that we've met at the doors. It's been unbelievable," said Cllr Ryan.
