WATCH | 'Refugees in, racists out': Limerick marks World Refugee Day

THE message was loud and clear this Tuesday to mark World Refugee Day - “refugees are welcome in Limerick and there’s no place for racism in the city.”

Organised by Limerick Anti-Racism Network, an event saw a crowd gather to stand against hate and in solidarity with targeted minorities.

Organiser and member of Limerick Anti-Racism Network, Zoe Lawlor, told Limerick Live: “I've been involved in refugee solidarity and in Palestinian solidarity for years. We felt it was very important that we have an action today for World Refugee Day to show that Limerick is a place where racism is unwelcome and refugees and migrants are welcome, and are a huge addition and plus to all our communities.”

"People come here, and especially with this kind of growing far-right threat, we want to show that that's a minority of people and that the majority of people welcome refugees."

CEO of Doris, John Lannon also joined the event. “I’m here today, standing with others on World Refugee Day to say loudly and clearly that refugees are welcome in Limerick and that there’s no place for racism in the city or county. We sadly have incidents on an ongoing basis, and we need to ensure that we’re all aware of the terrible impact that racism has on, he said.

Mr Lannon added: “Individuals who may be seeking international protection here, who may be refugees, who may be people of colour or from minority backgrounds have the same rights as everybody else has to make Limerick their home to be safe, to be welcome here. So, we are out in the streets today just to say that everybody is welcome.”
