WATCH: Roisin Ambrose previews Limerick Ladies League opener against Kilkenny

THIS Sunday, Limerick Ladies Gaelic Football team take on Kilkenny in Division 4 of the Lidl Ladies National Football League.

This week at a Limerick squad training session on a frosty evening in Adare, Leader Sport caught up with captain Roisin Ambrose who explained that the squad are ready to go after months of pre-season training.

“We’ve a huge panel of players, 36 players this year, it's absolutely brilliant to see for Limerick Ladies Football, we’ve a good mix of clubs which is also essential for a county team and we’ve some good up and coming players as well," Roisin Ambrose tole Leader Sport.

The Old Mill player has had many on-pitch battles with her Limerick team mates during the local club championship but when it comes to donning the green jersey, the team focus on the job at hand.

“When we are playing against each other in club it does get heated, a bit feisty, but when we come back during county we are all best of friends, we take no notice, we forget about it and it's back to focusing on County football for the year,” Roisin added.

The IRFU announced during the week that the women's team will be swapping white shorts for navy ones to alleviate any concerns over periods while playing, something which the Treaty County squad adopted a few years ago.

“I think it's brilliant just for players' confidence when they are out on the pitch. We changed to navy shorts two years ago and you’d have no worries going out on the field which is the main thing, you want to be going out with a focused mind on the game and not focusing on anything else.

“It can be something that girls are conscious of and anything that can make playing a little bit easier is so important and that’s definitely helping,” she explained.

All Ladies Football games are now shown and streamed online, a very welcome move according to the midfielder.

“It’s super altogether, TG4 have been huge fans of the LGFA the past few years which has been brilliant to see as well, since covid they have been streaming every single game which is brilliant for us too because we are Division 4, we are a junior side which are normally the games that aren’t shown so for my grandmother or friends abroad, they can watch the matches, it’ brilliant for them as well,” she concluded.

Limerick take on Kilkenny in the Kilkenny Training Centre, Dunmore at 2pm on Sunday and can be streamed online from https://ladiesgaelic.ie/
