THE PEOPLE’S Museum of Limerick has been named Limerick Person of the Month for their work in the Limerick community.
The People’s Museum of Limerick is run by Limerick Civic Trust and housed in a restored Georgian townhouse at No 2 Pery Square.
William O’Neill, Curator of Museums at Limerick Civic Trust, received the award on behalf of the People’s Museum and Limerick Civic Trust.
Mr O’Neill said that the award “means an awful lot” for him and the staff of the People’s Museum: “This is a huge honour, we’re delighted to have people support us”.
“We try to do an awful lot for the artistic community, for different other charities… We want to help other charities and just, to get this, it means an awful lot. It really, really does,” he continued.
The museum aims to “reflect the diverse lives of the people, buildings, and streets of the city”.
It showcases the “eclectic and fascinating” collection of items in the care of Limerick Civic Trust.
As well as this, the museum has a “fantastic” group of tour guides who give walking tours of the city.
Mr O’Neill explained that the museum tries “to be accessible for artists to display their work, for people to hold their creative events, arts classes, dance classes”.
“We just try our best for the local community and we’re delighted with this (award), we really are,” he added.

Limerick Civic Trust was founded in 1982, and is an independent non-profit society which is registered as a charity.
The aim of the organisation is to “initiate and undertake projects for the improvement of Limerick’s environment”.
The organisation operates under the three core pillars of conservation, environment, and education.
These core goals manifest themselves through the restoration of historic properties that have become derelict, the improvement of the environment in Limerick by maintaining civic spaces, and raising awareness of the value of our local heritage, which is done through publishing books and pamphlets, organising lectures, and running walking tours throughout the year.
Mr O’Neill encourages the public to support the People’s Museum and the work it does “by coming in and getting a tour from the fantastic tour guides that we have. We’re blessed to have the team of tour guides and operatives that we have onsite”.
“People can donate to the Limerick Civic Trust online if they want to support our work, not only in the museum sector, but also just looking after Limerick’s built heritage,” he continued.
The Limerick Person of the Month award is sponsored by the Limerick Leader, media agency Southern, and the Clayton Hotel.
