Aisling Annacotty 1

Geraldines 0

The top of the table clash between Aisling Annacotty and Geraldines brought the crowds to Annacotty on Saturday when a Conor Coughlan goal in the first half saw Aisling take the spoils and leapfrog Geraldines to the top of the table.

After an evenly contested opening half, Aisling took a lead into the dressing room, but after the restart the home side had to defend for their lives over the next 45 minutes as Geraldines chased the game.

Experienced goalkeeper Stephen McNamara played a big part in the win. He had a collection of good saves throughout but he also kept his young defence calm as the pressure built.

Ten minutes before the break, Aisling took the lead. Jack Aherne did well to break up a Geraldines attack and fed the ball to left-back Adam Costello, who played a clever ball in behind the Geraldines defence for Conor Coughlan to race through, leave the defenders in his wake and fire to the back of the net for a superb goal.

Geraldines emerged determined after the restart and were awarded a free kick outside the area. James Fitzgerald hit an excellent effort heading for the top corner before McNamara got a fingertip to it to put the ball over the bar.

Shane Dillon came sliding into the box to get on the end of Leon Johnson’s delivery, but once again Stephen McNamara blocked the effort.

Geraldines continued to push in the closing stages, peppering the Aisling goalmouth, but could not get the required touch to avoid defeat.
