‘People have short memories’: Lee Reeves' friend in key update on Limerick boxer

Former boxer and friend of Lee’s, Jonathan O’Brien, shared the update on social media
A FRIEND of Lee Reeves has spoken out to thank those who have pushed for better care in the recovery of the popular Limerick boxer while pointing out that some people “have short memories”.
The 31-year-old sustained a serious head injury in a knock-out during a bout in the 3Arena on Saturday, August 1. He has been in hospital in Dublin ever since.
Former boxer Jonathan O’Brien, who is a good friend of Lee’s and the Reeves’ family, shared an update in a post on social media on Wednesday evening, September 16.
Earlier that day, he had posted a video expressing his frustration that the operation that Lee was due to have had yet again been postponed. In the post, he asked for help from local politicians and asked his followers to spread the word.
On Wednesday evening, he was pleased to share that his video had done its job.
“How amazing social media is,” he said. “We’d done a video today and we called out the hospital and we called out for help and thank you very much to everybody that has shared it and reposted it.”
He gave a special shout-out to councillor Catherine Slattery and Willie O’Dea TD for pushing to get the help Lee needs.
Jonathan explained that Lee’s operation will now be done at the Mater Hospital.
He has explained previously that the operation will “put a plate back in Lee’s head where he had to get the skull removed to release the pressure from the brain from the trauma of the boxing”.
“They’re gonna sit down with the family on Friday... and they’re gonna set a date to do the operation,” Jonathan said.
He credited this progress to “everybody that has pushed our social media and shared everything,” adding that Lee’s family gives their thanks to everyone who has helped.
“We have to be the voice for Lee Reeves,” Jonathan continued. “Lee Reeves has helped so many people over the years, so many people all over Ireland, and people forget, people have short memories.
“At the end of the day, Lee Reeves needs us to voice our opinion for him and push and fight for him, and that’s what we’re doing.”
He added that “this road is not over yet,” and promised to keep everyone updated on Lee’s progress in the coming days.
