A SCINTILLATING third-quarter burst saw Bruff power their way to consecutive wins in the Lyons of Limerick Premier Intermediate Hurling Championship, defeating Glenroe 3-19 to 0-13 in Kilfinane.

Danny O’Leary, Sean Finn and Darragh Butler all found the back of the net in a 10-minute spell after an even opening to contest.

After two draws, a one-point defeat and a one-point win in their opening four games, another nail-biter was on the cards when the men in red led 0-10 to 0-9 at the interval.

However, Paddy O’Leary’s pushed on after the break to put this contest to bed mid-way through the second period.

Glenroe will be disappointed to have shot 15 wides over the course of the hour as they see themselves in a relegation dogfight heading into the final two rounds of fixtures.

The result has the Stars in a really strong position in the top four as we approach the business end in this second-tier competition.

Josh Keating and Barry Callinan impressed for the winners and got on the scoreboard early on. The pair contributed 0-4 each to their tally in noteworthy displays.

Glenroe had three wides and a shot drop short before Sean O’Donnell opened their account. Scores from Ciaran Kelly and Liam Dennehy ensured they stayed within touching distance. A pair of Adame Frewen points - one from play, one from a free - had the game level at 0-5 apiece midway through the half.

Frewen’s third on the trot gave Glenroe their only lead of the game. It was a lead that lasted less than 60 seconds as Callinan levelled the game before Sean Finn put Bruff in front.

Owen Meaney, Danny O’Leary and Keating got points late in the half to put them 0-10 to 0-9 up at the break.

That third quarter burst where Bruff outscored Glenroe 3-4 to 0-1 was the winning of the game however.

The men in green and black kept fighting to the end but the errant shooting added to a disappointing night for Danny Murphy’s side. Bob Frewen got their only point from play in the second half with 10 minutes to go.

Bruff on the other side had Callinan, Butler, Meaney, Charlie Cronin and Paul Browne all contribute to the scoring as they backed up the win over Dromin-Athlacca with an impressive display here.

They face Granagh-Ballingarry in Round 6, while Glenroe take on Croagh-Kilfinny. Those games will be played between September 17-20.
