Met Éireann is forecasting a stunning 22C sun blast for Ireland this week as the National Ploughing Championships get underway but a big change will follow after it.

In its latest forecast, Met Éireann said Tuesday "will be largely dry with long spells of sunshine for many. Highest temperatures 18 to 22 degrees. Light to moderate east to southeast winds will mean that it will be coolest in eastern and southern coasts.

"Tuesday night will be dry with clear spells. Some mist may form near dawn and will clear quickly with the sunrise. Lowest temperatures 7 to 11 degrees with light easterly winds," the forecast continued.

They go on to say "Wednesday, Thursday and Friday will all be dry with sunny spells and light easterly winds, temperatures will range between 17 and 21 degrees, coolest along east facing coasts.

"Night time temperatures will be down to 7 to 11 degrees with clear spells and light breezes allowing a little mist or fog around dawn."

However, a change will follow after with Met Éireann saying: "Current indications suggest that there will be a greater possibility of showers next weekend with temperatures dropping back to the mid to high teens."

An even bigger shift in our weather fortunes could be on the way beyond that. Met Éireann's extended forecast pinpoints the final days of September and early days of October for a return to "low pressure."

Forecasters say: "There is a weak signal that low pressure will have more of an influence over Ireland’s weather during this week [September 30]. This will allow more frequent spells of rain to spread across the country from the Atlantic. Rainfall amounts are likely to increase compared to previous weeks, with slightly wetter than average conditions indicated nationwide. Mean temperatures will be just above normal also."

The confidence on the weather models is lower after that but the second week in October looks like bringing "a predominantly westerly airflow to affect Ireland, bringing above average rainfall for western and northern areas. Rainfall will be closer to normal or slightly below for parts of the east and southeast. Temperatures will remain above average."
